Responsible Innovators Award 2017: Herambiente obtains a special mention

On 6 December 2017 the final event of the third edition of the ER.Rsi Responsible Innovators Award was held at Florim Ceramiche S.p.a. in Fiorano Modenese (Modena, Italy). Responsible Innovators is an award established by the Region of Emilia-Romagna that aims to acknowledge the sustainable development action taken by businesses in Emilia Romagna and their efforts to achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Herambiente participated with the "From separate organic waste collection to biomethane" project, obtaining a special mention in the 'Businesses with over 250 employees' category: “The company is taking precise steps towards sustainability via a strategy that includes the decision to modernise an existing plant without using up any more land. Summing up, Herambiente has succeeded in boosting waste collection performance, increasing the availability of sustainable energy sources and protecting both air and ground from pollution”.

Project goals: creation of a circular solution that begins with separate waste collection in homes and comes back to the community in the form of the biomethane produced at the plant in S. Agata Bolognese. The resulting gas will be fed back into the mains supply or be used to power public transport vehicles across the province. The plant engineering project - implemented on the existing composting site - will be completed by the end of 2018.

Proposed solution: thanks to implementation of cutting-edge anaerobic digestion techniques and upgrades, the plant will produce natural gas with a methane percentage of over 95% without compromising material retrieval and compost production operations. This plant - a 30 million euro investment on an existing site - will handle 135,000 tons of sorted organic waste and leaves/cuttings a year. Once up and running it will produce 20,000 tons of compost and 7.5 million cubic metres of biomethane, saving over 6,000 toe (tons of oil equivalent) of fossil fuels and preventing 14,600 tons of CO2 emissions every year.
