Landfill has reached non-hazardous waste capacity

The Baricella (Bologna) Landfill is located north east of the city, which is no more than 25 km away, as the crow flies.

Acceptance of landfill waste ceased in 2006 and the plant“s closure was approved by the Province of Bologna in February 2007, in accordance with Article 12 of Legislative Decree 36/03.

    Horizontal and vertical drainage using perforated pipes and draining materials. The leachate is channelled by gravity from the bottom, which is divided into eight compartments (cells), each equipped with its own drainage and collection network, to a main collector, which runs along the longitudinal axis of the landfill, and is delivered by means of a lifting plant to one of the storage tanks. The leachate is transported by tanker to authorised treatment plants.

    The biogas captured is used to generate electricity that is used to power all of the site's consumption needs; the plant consists of two eight-stroke engines with overall generation of 1,250 kWe.
    In emergency situations or during scheduled down-time, the auxiliary biogas combustion system comprising high-temperature gas flaring with a flow rate of 1,000 Nm3/hr is automatically activated.

    Clay, 2.5 mm thick HDPE liner, liner protected with fine sand, geotextile and drainage gravel (bottom drainage of leachate).

    Top liner with 50 cm of clay, drainage mat and 100 cm of cultivated clay soil for future use as green woodland.

    The landfill site is delimited by a basic embankment to guarantee hydraulic safety against all possible flood events that could affect the area.
    The following activities are carried out so as to guarantee maximum environmental protection and compliance with all environmental prescriptions:

    • monitoring and control of surface water and waste water;
    • monitoring and control of groundwater and drainage water;
    • monitoring and control of leachates;
    • monitoring and control of atmospheric emissions and air quality;
    • monitoring and control of usage - water withdrawals;
    • monitoring and control of usage - raw materials;
    • monitoring and control of usage - fuel;
    • monitoring and control of energy - production and usage;
    • control of dedicated environmental protection plants and equipment.
