The landfill is located in Voltana di Lugo (RA) and forms part of the Lugo Integrated Waste Centre, which also comprises a municipal solid waste dry fraction selection plant managed by Akron S.p.A. (a subsidiary of Herambiente S.p.A.) and the composting plant managed by Herambiente.

    Compacting and re-covering of the waste with earth, stabilised organic fraction, fireproof and waterproof liner.

    Groundwater is protected by a specific leachate collection and management plant, which includes a sand drainage layer (50 cm) crossed by a herringbone drainage network of perforated tubes placed laterally and connected to a central collector that conveys the leachate to four collection/lifting wells. Subsequently, four extraction pumps send the leachate extracted from the landfill site to be stored in a special tank before being transferred by tankers to the authorised treatment plant.

    The biogas produced by the landfill site is captured by a collection system consisting of a drainage well that channels the biogas to the aspiration plant via a specific supply network and finally sends it to high-temperature gas flaring for combustion.

    Compacted mineral layer at the first seal level consisting of clay material. The second watertight seal level comprises a Bentonite mat, a 2 mm HDPE sheet protecting the two previous levels and a sand drainage layer (bottom drainage of the leachate).

    The final top covering consists of a regulation layer, biogas drainage, a clay waterproofing layer, water drainage and a surface layer of topsoil.

    For the final covering of the embankments, geomembranes will be used in place of gravel drainage layers and a Bentonite geocomposite with a sealing function will be used in place of the clay layer (all geocomposites mentioned above must have characteristics that are strictly equivalent to the requirements of Legislative Decree 36/2003 in relation to the respective functional layers).

    The environmental matrices and emissions monitored as environmental surveillance of the potential impact of the operational management of the landfill are:

    • rainwater;
    • groundwater;
    • surface water (receiving vessels);
    • leachate;
    • atmospheric particulate;
    • monitoring of biogas composition;
    • landfill emissions;
    • air quality (Odorous substances);
    • monitoring of leachate explosiveness on the management network;
    • noise monitoring.
