The Sommacampagna landfill accepts non-hazardous waste.

Structurally, the facility is configured as a typical lowland landfill. The basin into which the waste is deposited exploits a former gravel quarry, thus significantly reducing preliminary excavation work. The landfill is situated on agricultural land between the populated areas of Sommacampagna, Caselle and Lugagnano di Sona.

The soil is predominantly gravel.

    Landfill waste must meet and comply with the requirements of the monitoring and operational management plan approved jointly by the Province, ARPAV and the Region.
    The handling and storage activities aim to guarantee the placement of waste with minimal environmental impact, creating overlapping, compacted layers with the waste to maximise the density of the waste. At the same time the infiltration of rainwater and thus the formation of leachate must be minimised by covering the body of the waste placed in uncultivated temporary areas with synthetic geomembranes.


    The leachate produced is collected in the landfill site through a drainage network and sent to the storage cisterns through dedicated piping, and from there the leachate is sent to authorised treatment plants.


    Clay reprofiled on site, 2.5 mm thick HDPE liner, liner protected with geotextile, fine sand and drainage gravel (bottom drainage of the leachate).


    In consultation with the local Authorities, the operator has identified a series of mitigating/offsetting steps to be taken in the area surrounding the landfill so as to allow natural site reclamation.

    It thus aims to check:

    • gaseous emissions and air quality, coming from the landfill site.
    • noise emissions;
    • the characteristics of the leachate;
    • ground and subsoil.
