    Leachate is collected by means of a gravel drainage mass, in which perforated drainage pipes are laid to carry the leachate to the lifting wells and to a storage tank for subsequent disposal at the composting plant managed by the company Romagna Compost, located near the landfill, or at other authorised plants.

    The biogas is captured by horizontal drains, vertical wells and an aspiration network that channels it to the energy recovery plant for the generation of electricity managed by Romagna Energia S.r.l. (total installed power of 1,100 kW) or is, alternatively, incinerated by high-temperature gas flaring.

    Sealing of the bottom and the sides of the landfill is achieved with two levels of seal as required by Legislative Decree 36/2003.
    The first level comprises a mineral barrier consisting of clay loam laid in homogeneous layers not exceeding 30 cm in thickness and adequately compacted, with final thickness equal to or in excess of one metre.
    The second level comprises a 2 mm thick, high-density polyethylene geomembrane (HDPE), which is rough on both sides.

    The landfill´s final covering is formed by a multi-layer packet comprising, from top to bottom, the following layers:

    • surface covering with soil with a thickness ≥ 1 m on which the plant species envisaged in the environmental restoration plan are to be planted;
    • drainage layer with a thickness of ≥ 0.5 m;
    • compacted mineral layer with hydraulic conductivity K < 10-8 m/s;
    • biogas drainage and capillary breakdown layer with a thickness of ≥ 0.5 m;
    • regulation layer.

    Environmental monitoring and surveillance
    The plant is equipped with a system for transferring surface water (ditches at the top of the landfill embankment and road ditches) and a bottom channel for the removal of the water that falls on the landfill´s sealed surfaces, thus preventing such water from coming into contact with the mass of waste. The bottom and the sides of the landfill are sealed with a mineral barrier and a high-density polythene geomembrane.
    The plant´s overall stability is checked on a regular basis by means of the scheduled collection of inclinometer readings and topographical and morphological survey data, while the efficiency and integrity of the environmental measures (sealing systems, leachate collection and biogas capture networks) are duly checked in accordance with the environmental authorisation currently in force.
    The environmental matrices and emissions monitored as environmental surveillance of the potential impact of the operational management of the landfill are:

    • groundwater;
    • surface water;
    • below-liner water;
    • leachate;
    • monitoring of biogas composition;
    • landfill emissions;
    • air quality;
    • noise monitoring.
