Conceria Settebello and Hera Group: the art of recovery
Together for the recovery of plastic waste in the tanning sector
The ambitious goal of achieving 100% waste recovery
The tannery based in Santa Croce sull'Arno, in Tuscany, has entrusted Herambiente with the management of its waste, setting itself the ambitious goal of achieving 100% recovery. At Lineapelle, an artistic exhibit showcasing furniture entirely made from waste materials. A stand at Lineapelle, last September, entirely set up with furniture made from waste recycled by Scart, the Hera Group laboratory where industrial waste is transformed into works of art. This is how the collaboration between Herambiente Servizi Industriali (Hera Group) and Conceria Settebello in Santa Croce sull'Arno began, with a highly challenging goal: to achieve 100% waste recovery. To reach this target, we are working on multiple fronts. For example, we have implemented dedicated waste sorting systems for packaging to optimise quality and reduce volume. In addition, the collected material will be sold as secondary raw material, offsetting the cost of waste management. Herambiente and Settebello are also focusing on the so called closed loop cycle for polyethylene. Settebello receives regenerated PE for its new packaging, supplied by Aliplast (Hera Group), a European leader in plastic recycling, which results in a significant reduction of the carbon footprint, certified by Aliplast.

In addition, for containers such as tanks and cans that contained dyes and solvents, Herambiente is responsible for their collection and washing, ensuring, wherever possible, the complete removal of chemical residues. These containers are then sent for plastic recovery or, if this is not possible, to waste-to-energy facilities. The collaboration with Herambiente aligns with Settebello's long-standing commitment to sustainability, as evidenced by its first Sustainability Report this year.
Settebello was one of the first companies in its sector to obtain recognitions such as the UNI EN ISO 9001 certification (quality management), UNI EN ISO 14001 (environment), and the UNIC Code of Conduct. More recently, they have added the EMAS registration, the ICEC TS_410 certification for leather traceability upon entry, the UNI ISO 45001 health and safety management system, the Leather Working Group protocol, and the ethical claim “we recover our hides from the food chain” (ICEC TS 733). Finally, they also hold the ICEC certification for their commitment to sustainability.
