Together to recover waste by producing fertilisers
Italconcia, a specialist in the tanning of high end leather, has become part of an initiative designed to strengthen circularity within the sector through its collaboration with the Herambiente Group. The project is based on Bbl Bio based leather, a leather product free from petroleum derivatives, made at Italconcia's plants in Castelfranco di Sotto and used by leading global luxury footwear and leather producers. Under the agreement with Herambiente Servizi Industriali, a subsidiary of the Hera Group, all leather waste from Bbl branded products will be collected and processed for recovery into high quality fertiliser. This initiative will take place not only at the Castelfranco di Sotto facility, but also across all Italconcia's clients throughout Italy. What makes this collaboration particularly innovative is its integration of waste recovery into the clients' value chains. Herambiente will provide technical solutions for the sorting of leather waste at both Italconcia's plants and those of its clients, handle the transport to its platforms in Castelfranco di Sotto and Torrebelvicino, carry out material checks, and supply the waste to selected fertiliser producers. The resulting fertiliser, which will be used in agriculture, will also be supplied to Tuscan plant nurseries, effectively closing the recovery loop within a few kilometres.
Sustainable leather
“Be Future is part of a wider commitment by Italconcia to sustainability”, explains Andrea Martini, General Manager of Italconcia. “This process is the result of regulatory changes, but also stems from our strong awareness of the environmental challenges ahead. That's why, when developing Bbl leather, we envisioned its recovery from the outset, to offer our clients a product that is doubly sustainable, free of fossil substances, and turns raw material into secondary raw material, generating value within a circular economy process”.
