Fib3r project on recycled carbon fibre wins "Premio Innovatori Responsabili" 2024 in the “Green Transition” category

01/10/2024

The partnership between Herambiente (Hera Group), Curti and the University of Bologna for the valorisation of carbon fibre waste through thermal regeneration has been rewarded for its commitment to identifying new circular solutions to replace the obsolete landfill disposal of certain types of waste that are complex to manage, such as composite materials, which from today will instead return to the value chain of the companies producing the same waste.

After a three-year experiment, Herambiente is concluding the construction of an industrial carbon fibre recycling plant in Imola (BO). The plant is the result of an important technological experimentation and research activity carried out in collaboration with the Toso Montanari Department of Industrial Chemistry of the University of Bologna (UNIBO) and its technological partner Curti.

UNIBO, thanks to the support of Director of the Master's Degree Course ‘Composite Materials (MaCoF)’ Loris Giorgini, was in charge of the initial research phase and the design of the instrumental laboratory at the Imola site.

Curti manufactures lines, automatic machines and complex sub-assemblies for the mechanical sector and for various industrial applications, including the thermal treatment of solid matrices for material recovery and/or the production of energy and synthesis products. As part of the project, Curti made all its knowledge available for the modelling of the solution studied at its research centre and subsequently to manage the industrial-scale construction of the plant.

The “Premio Innovatori Responsabili 2024” focused on the Region's “Patto per il lavoro e per il clima” and Strategy 2030, proposing to emphasise the contribution of the production and training system to the objectives set by these strategic documents, also in response to the economic and social emergencies caused by the climate crisis and the increase in energy and raw materials costs. Fib3r is realising a concrete intervention in favour of the circular economy on the territory in line with the objectives of Agenda 2030, which promotes sustainable production and consumption systems. Fib3r represents a new business model for circularity, waste reduction and new green supply chains.

The award ceremony was held on 30 September 2024 at the Tecnopolo Manifattura in Bologna. The Regional Councillor for Economic Development and Green Economy, Labour, Training and International Relations Vincenzo Colla has presented the award to Daniele Biondi, FIB3R Plant Manager in Imola. Alongside him on the occasion were Prof. Loris Giorgini and Eugenio Guerrieri BU Director of Curti Circular Economy and Packaging Solutions.
