Overview
The Montale waste to energy plant, owned by the wholly publicly owned company CIS S.p.A., covers about 23,050 m2 of which 5,346 m2 is permeable and 17,704 m2 non permeable. It aims to dispose of special waste and unsorted municipal waste produced within the collection basin of the ATO Toscana Centro, producing electricity using waste as an energy source.
The Herambiente Group was awarded the management of the plant for three years (renewable for an additional 12 months plus a possible six month technical extension). In addition to the day to day management from January 2025, Herambiente plans to carry out improvement works for more than 3.7 million euros that will positively affect the plant's operation and environmental performance.
The plant at present is composed of three disposal lines, two of which are in operation (L1 and L3) and one (L2) inactive since 2015.
By Ordinance of the Province of Pistoia No. 1245, confirmed by Tuscany Region Decree No. 1200 of 25.01.2023, the disposal of waste up to saturation of the thermal load, equal to 13 MWt for L1 and 10 MWt for L3, for a total of 23 MWt, was authorized.
Currently, the plant has an average daily disposal rate of about 150 tons/day.
