The winning partnership between Herambiente and BASF
Together to manage industrial waste in a sustainable way
With BASF since 2009
The partnership between Herambiente and BASF began in 2009, when the Pontecchio Marconi (Bologna) facility, which specialised in the chemical synthesis of plastic additives, became part of the German multinational. HASI is the plant's main supplier and manages tens of thousands of tonnes of hazardous liquid waste per year, thanks to an integrated system of plants, located in Ravenna (chemical physical biological plant, waste to energy plant, Storage and pre tratment centre in Ravenna) and in Pisa (evaporatore). In 2016, HASI became a supplier to BASF Chemicals, Treviso, and two years later, a supplier of the transport and treatment of liquid waste, both hazardous and non hazardous, at the Rome plant. In the same year, BASF planned to expand the Pontecchio Marconi facility, resulting in an increase of about 50% over 4 years in the liquid waste produced. To develop a project that ensures proper treatment and minimises environmental impact, BASF selected HASI as one of its partners. HASI translated this need into a technological project to expand the capacity of the chemical physical treatment plant in the Ravenna area, implementing treatments suited to critical components (COD, TKN, aromatic organic solvents and chlorides) and optimising logistics to reduce CO2 emissions. “BASF is a long standing and strategic customer for Herambiente Servizi Industriali, fostering not just a business relationship over time but also a continuous exchange of expertise and technical know how,” says Manuela Gori, Sales Manager for HASI's pharmaceutical and chemical segment.

Together to manage industrial waste sustainably
A shared commitment to environmental sustainability has strengthened the relationship between HASI and BASF, evolving it into ongoing technical and consultancy support aimed at implementing major efficiency improvements in waste management, such as:
• analytical screening of the main waste produced (water washing solutions and mother liquors) with a careful measurement of the concentration of organic substances, including nitrogen, to reduce the production of sludge downstream of the treatment and its environmental impact;
• sharing of data relating to the efficiency of the treatment of pollutants, supporting BASF in the fulfilments that are part of the "Responsible Care" programme, to which it adheres;
• assessment of the technical and economic impacts caused by changes in pollutants resulting from new productions.
The partnership between the Hera Group and BASF focuses on sustainability and is not limited to the treatment and recovery of industrial waste. In Pontecchio Marconi, BASF produces additives used in the plastic recycling process, which make it possible to obtain recycled polymers with a workability and resistance close to that of virgin plastic. Herambiente also uses these classes of molecules in its recovery and recycling plants, helping to extend the lifespan of plastic by turning waste into new raw material.
