The San Vito al Tagliamento plant is authorised to receive, store and start the recovery and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste. As an exception to Article 187(1) of Italian Legislative Decree No. 152 of 3 April 2006, the mixing of hazardous waste with different hazardous characteristics, i.e. hazardous waste with non-hazardous waste, is authorised.
The warehouse of the Storage Centre has an area of about 1,500 m2; the waste is stored in clearly compartmentalised plots. The plant is also equipped with 7 tanks with a capacity of 30 m3 for the storage of both hazardous and non-hazardous bulk liquid waste. An abatement system consisting of a two-stage acid-base scrubber with a static contact bed and activated carbon filter is connected to the liquid storage tank vents.
An electrically powered hydraulic press is used for the compacting of mineral wool waste, producing compressed bales of waste, which are then strapped and wrapped with film. During operation, the press is connected to an emission abatement system consisting of a suction hood equipped with a double filter. Specific waste control procedures are applied both when contracts are drawn up with customers (approval phase) and when disposals are received at the centre. After the control phase, waste is stored in the appropriate storage areas or tanks waiting to be sent for recovery or disposal operations at external final disposal plants.
